You have just watched a stack of pallets get loaded onto a van and driven off your site. The cash is in your pocket and the yard is a bit tidier. But have you ever wondered where those pallets actually go next?
At CM Pallets, we are a family run business with 20 years of experience collecting and recycling pallets across Essex, London, Kent and the wider South East. We deal with thousands of pallets every month, so we thought it was time to explain what really happens once your pallets leave your gates.
Stop One: Collection
The journey starts when our driver arrives at your site. Because we offer a 24 hour guaranteed collection service, you are never left waiting around with pallets piling up in your yard. The pallets are loaded, counted and taken back to our depot. For most businesses, this is the last they see of their pallets. For us, this is where the real work begins.
Stop Two: Inspection and Grading
Back at the yard, every single pallet is checked by hand. Nobody just throws them onto a pile and hopes for the best. We look at the boards, the blocks, the size and the overall condition of each one. This inspection decides what happens next, which is why pallets are sorted into grades rather than lumped together as one type.
| Grade | Condition | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Grade A | Like new, minimal wear | Resold as premium stock |
| Graded Euro | Sound structure, light wear | Repaired if needed, then resold |
| Lightweight or damaged | Weaker boards, some damage | Repaired for lighter loads or broken down |
| Beyond repair | Rotten, broken, or contaminated | Sent for wood recycling |
You can see how this grading system works in more detail on our graded Euro pallets page, which explains exactly what separates each grade.
Stop Three A: Repaired and Resold
Pallets that are sound but a little worn often just need a small repair. This might mean swapping a cracked board, replacing a bent nail, or reinforcing a weak corner. Once repaired, the pallet is cleaned, re-graded and added back into stock, ready for a new life carrying goods for another business.
This is the heart of the circular economy for pallets. Rather than every worn pallet being thrown away, a huge number are simply patched up and sent straight back out to work. It is better for the environment, and it also keeps costs down for buyers who purchase graded stock.
Stop Three B: Broken Down and Recycled
Not every pallet can be saved, and that is completely normal. Wood is a natural material, and after years of being loaded, stacked and dragged across warehouse floors, some pallets simply cannot hold weight safely any more.
When a pallet cannot be repaired, it does not go to landfill. Instead, it is broken down and sent through our wood recycling process. The timber is sorted and processed, then turned into recycled wood products that get a second life in all sorts of ways, from animal bedding to biomass fuel.
This matters more than people realise. According to the Health and Safety Executive, almost 2.8 million tonnes of the UK’s waste wood is now recycled every year, and that figure keeps rising as more businesses look for greener ways to deal with their wood waste.
Why This Matters for You
Understanding this journey explains a few things that might have puzzled you before.
- Why the price varies. A pallet in great condition is worth more because it can be resold straight away, while a damaged one is worth less because it needs repair or recycling first.
- Why sorting matters at your end too. Keeping pallets dry and stacked properly before collection means more of them will make the grade for resale, which is better for everyone.
- Why nothing really goes to waste. Between resale and recycling, very little pallet material ever ends up as general rubbish.
Our Personal Approach
As a family run business, we try to offer the personal service that smaller businesses cannot get from larger, more impersonal companies. That means clear communication about where your pallets are going, fair prices based on honest grading, and a collection service you can rely on.
The Bigger Picture
The next time you take cash for a stack of old pallets, you can picture the whole journey. From your loading bay, to our inspection area, through grading, and finally either back out into circulation or through to recycling, every pallet has a purpose right up until the very end.
If you have pallets piling up and want to know more about how the process works for your business, get in touch with our team through our contact page. We are always happy to talk through collections, grading or recycling, whatever stage your pallets are at.
